It took everything in her not to storm onto the beach and trample the men under the weight of her grandmother’s horse. But she knew that rushing out there could put Sashi in danger; she’d either be knocked about in the fray by accident or harmed by one of the pirates on purpose. So Tiger Lily stayed where they had stopped, just out of sight, so close and yet so far away, to come up with a plan.

The mare gave a soft nicker, like a whisper, and bowed slightly. Just then, the deer turned and dashed back into the thick of the woods. Tiger Lily nodded in his direction, a silent thanks for his help.

A voice boomed out from the shoreline: it belonged to Bill Jukes. “What’s that?”

“Where?” Jolly answered.

“Over there,” Jukes replied.

“Uhhhhh, a deer, I think,” Jolly answered.

“Bah, you wouldn’t know a deer from a deck cat, you.”

“Maybe so, but that weren’t no cat.”

Tiger Lily held her breath. If they came near her now, she might get away, but they would know for sure that they were being followed. She waited.

“All right, then, let’s get a fire goin’ and cook up these fish,” Jukes said finally.

“I’m sick of fish,” Jolly complained. “Why do we always gotta have fish?”

“Well, then, maybe you oughta go after your man the deer, then. Catch us some venison for dinner.” Jukes’s answer was dripping with sarcasm.

“I don’t think pirates can hunt, Jukesy.” Jolly’s answer was quiet, maybe even a little embarrassed.

“Oh, then maybe that explains all the fish, don’t it?”

Tiger Lily led the mare back into the trees and dismounted without a sound. Then she followed the shadows as they moved along the beach and stopped at an area that had already been set up as a camp of sorts. She settled in to watch, keeping a close eye on Sashi.

“Musta been others here,” Jukes observed, touching a cutlass at his waist. “Hope they’re long gone. If they come back, I’ll give them a surprise, all right.”

“Yeah! This is our spot now!” Jolly yelled out, braver. He hung the handle of the jar on a low branch, jostling Sashi to and fro.

“And don’t you worry, my little friend.” Jukes tapped the glass separating Sashi from the sky. “We’ll get to you soon enough.”

“You think she’ll talk?” Jolly was already skewering a few skinny fish with a stick.

“She ain’t got a choice now, does she? Good thing I spent all that time learnin’ their silly bell language, eh?” Jukes laughed, turning to his friend. He sighed. “Well, now, why ya sticking the fish? Ya gotta make the fire first!”

By the time they got the fire going and began an argument about who was going to get the bigger fish and why, Tiger Lily knew she was in for a wait. After they ate, she watched them play a game of dice, burping their dinner and rubbing their bellies. She listened as they made a plan to sleep before interrogating their prisoner. After all, it was already late.
